How did the Red River Rivalry start?

Texas won the first meeting 28-2 in 1900, when Oklahoma was still a territory, and the teams have played every year since 1929. Since 1932 the game has been held at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas's Fair Park during the State Fair of Texas, roughly halfway between Austin and Norman, with tickets split 50-50 and the stadium divided at the 50-yard line. The name comes from the Red River, which forms part of the state line, and the game was called the Red River Shootout until the 100th meeting in 2005. In 1963 No. 2 Texas beat No. 1 Oklahoma on its way to its first national title, and in 2001 Teddy Lehman returned a deflected Chris Simms pass for the clinching touchdown in a 14-3 Oklahoma win. Both schools joined the SEC in 2024.
