How did the Lone Star Showdown start?

Texas beat Texas A&M 38-0 in Austin on October 19, 1894, and the teams played every year from 1915 to 2011, many of them on Thanksgiving Day. Both fight songs take aim at the other school: "Texas Fight" was written in answer to A&M taunts, and the "Aggie War Hymn" was first titled "Goodbye to Texas University." Eight days before the 1999 game the Aggie Bonfire collapsed during construction, killing 12 people, and A&M upset No. 5 Texas 20-16 at Kyle Field. The series stopped after A&M left for the SEC in 2012, with Justin Tucker's field goal at the gun giving Texas a 27-25 win in the 2011 finale, and came back in 2024 after Texas joined the SEC.
