Portal rebuilds

SP+ overall (up) against Transfer share (across). 68 teams (Power 4 and Notre Dame).

Up and right are always better: metrics where lower is better (like ranks or points allowed) run in reverse. Dashed lines are the averages of the teams shown; the solid line is the trend, what a team usually gets on the up axis for its spot across. The gray band is a normal miss: everything within 8.5 pts of the line, the size of a typical team's miss. Teams inside the band are doing about what the line expects; teams outside it are the real over- and underperformers. Tap or click a team to open it in Head to head.

What this shows

Did rebuilding through the 2026 transfer portal work? The share of each roster that arrived in the 2026 portal, against SP+. The line is the SP+ a team usually has for its portal share. This chart starts with power conferences and Notre Dame, because Group of Five rosters lean on transfers far more and sit lower in SP+ for other reasons, which would swamp the comparison. Switch Teams to All FBS to see everyone.

There is a weak negative relationship here (r = -0.22; r runs from −1 to +1, and positive means the two go together): teams higher on Transfer share tend to be worse on SP+ overall. Transfer share accounts for about 5% of the differences in SP+ overall across the 68 teams shown.

48 of 68 teams (71%) land inside the gray band, within 8.5 pts of the line: they're doing about what you'd expect. 10 are clearly above it and 10 clearly below; those are the real over- and underperformers.

Better than teams with a similar portal share: LSU (+19.4 pts), Ohio State (+18.1 pts), Georgia (+15.1 pts). Worse than teams with a similar portal share: Stanford (−23.1 pts), California (−16.6 pts), Rutgers (−15.7 pts).

Why does SP+ overall matter?

It's the best single number for how good a team is right now, schedule and all. If you only look at one rating, look at this one.
