What's the Victory Bell trophy?

Victory Bell: a 295-pound brass bell that rang on a Southern Pacific locomotive; the winner keeps it for a year and paints it blue for UCLA or cardinal for USC.

How did the Victory Bell start?

USC beat UCLA 76-0 in the first meeting in 1929, still the biggest margin in the series. UCLA's alumni association gave the bell to the student body in 1939, and in 1941 members of a USC fraternity slipped into the UCLA rooting section, helped load the bell onto a truck and drove off with it. It stayed hidden for more than a year as the pranks escalated, until the student body presidents agreed in 1942 that the game's winner would keep it. Both teams played their home games at the Coliseum until UCLA moved to the Rose Bowl in 1982. In 2006 UCLA beat No. 2 USC 13-9 at the Rose Bowl.
