How did The Game start?

Michigan beat Ohio State 34-0 in Ann Arbor in the first meeting in 1897, and the teams have played every year since 1918 except 2020, when COVID-19 cases on Michigan's team canceled the game. It has closed the regular season almost every year since 1935 and often decides the Big Ten title, the Rose Bowl berth and sometimes a shot at the national championship. The 1950 Snow Bowl was played in a Columbus blizzard with 45 punts, and the Ten-Year War between Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler began with Michigan's 1969 upset of top-ranked Ohio State. In 2006 the teams met unbeaten and ranked first and second in the BCS, and Ohio State won 42-39. Since 1934 Ohio State players have received a small gold pair of pants for beating Michigan.
