How did the Sunshine Showdown start?

Florida beat Florida State 21-7 in Gainesville on November 22, 1958, after Governor LeRoy Collins asked UF's president to start the series; Florida had been reluctant and a 1955 bill to force the game had failed. The game has alternated between Gainesville and Tallahassee since 1964 and is played late in the season, on Thanksgiving weekend. "Sunshine Showdown" is also the name of a state promotion that counts head-to-head wins across all sports. In 1994 Florida State came back from 31-3 down in the fourth quarter to tie 31-31, the "Choke at Doak," and the teams met twice in the Sugar Bowl in the 1990s, with Florida winning its first national title there in January 1997.
